Dr. Steve, all I can say is thank you. I have suffered with this for over 25 years; first through really bad posture (I was a fat tall kid) as a teen and then having greater pain through my dual careers, a digital illustrator and a regularly gigging bass player. There are nights when I have a bass strapped on my shoulder that the pain is so great that I don’t even know how I can finish. I recently had a massage therapist mention C.P.S. and a search brought me here.
    Thankfully,
    Alvaro

    Hi there.

Very interesting…. thank you for sharing.

I liked the content and also the way it was said.

I live in Tenerife (Canary Island, Spain).
I work as a body therapist (working with Shiatsu, massages and fasciatherapy) and a teacher of
Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Pilates and martial art.

Tomorrow we have an event organized by the “Ayuntamiento” (locals officials) called
“IV Feria del Comercio y del Deporte” in a place called “el Médano” (Tenerife – Granadilla ) with many different presentations of sports.
There, I’ll give a presentation of all the mentioned above.
I sure will include the basic exercise that you explained. …I don’t know if I’ll be able to explain it as well as you do; but I know that this is not important. As long as we’re in “the Vortex”.

    thank you.

Hi, I had my complete disc removed for L5-S1 (herniated and pressed on my right leg nerve, I couldn’t step on my foot, godawful sciatica). Suffered with pain (i had taken a serious fall) for close to 6 months, then it became impossible (I also carry heavy bags as part of my job – on one shoulder, briefcase), not good.

Anyway, the surgery to remove the disc and decompression there and where else there was stenosis there, fixed the sciatica but left me right foot largely numb, extremely painful to walk on. Now both feet are bad and I have that plantar thing – cramped, etc. Am told I need spinal fusion, don’t want. Have gained 45 lbs (I was a skinny thing), stopped going to the gym, on meds. I want this to change without surgery. Am back at the gym and eating better, trying not to lift those bags, and so on – will your instruction help me with this? My hips were xrayed 2 yrs ago when I first complained of pain in them (lying in bed), hard for me to sit down and up as you describe. Hips hurt in bed when I lay on my sides (on the hoip bones). Can you help me? what else can I be doing to help myself?

Glad I found you, I plan on doing your exercises daily, making them a routine. Yoga (which i did when younger) I found I couldnt do now (gentler class at my gym which was still distasteful, too much). Thanks,

I am a walker, over the last few years i have developed lower back pain which I now think is piriformis syndrome. It does not affect my training or races, but i do have a tight right hamstring most of the time. I train 4-6 times a week 9-13ks at a time. Sometimes after training or races i get really tight in my lower back area, and it feels almost like my leg is going to collapse. I have been stretching although because it did not really seem to help, I have got a bit slack with stretching. I have always had tight calves, thats why i walk and not run as I got bad cramps when I ran. I do noit really cramp when walking- I have walked 6 Ultras including 2 comrades and 8 marathons.

I do have narrow disks in L4/L5 and am 1.88m tall. How can i get my lower back lees tense?

It starts with re-awakening your deep intrinsic core stability muscles so your outer “global” muscles can relax. The fundamental exercise series will help you get started with that. The full home training course and coaching will also be available soon.

    Hi
Firstly, thanks for your informative website/videos. Much appreciated.

I’ve been suffering from a sciatica nerve pain for about a year now. I’ve tried many different things including massage, acupuncture, stretches, resting, not resting etc. and nothing seems to take away this pain I get in my left buttock (and sometimes a bit further down) when in certain positions (mostly when tilting the head or bending slightly/crouching or getting up from lying down). Its not really very painful, although sometime it can be. Especially worse in the mornings and gets better after doing some gentle exercises/stretches. After sitting it is often worse. Strangely, if i do physical work it can make it go away. Worst is driving a car for 2 hours+.

Anyway, I’m not sure if it is piriformis muscle inflammation or a disc problem. I do remember it started after a back pain (felt like stiff muscle) in the lower back after running/exercising. Once the back ache cleared the sciatica started.

Haven’t had x-rays or any examination other than non-invasive inspection from a masseuse and Chinese doctor. Both claim it is a disc problem, but neither can solve it.

The stretch example on you tube that you give feels good. Will try it. I like the idea of keeping the back straight. Seems to help. Wondered if yuo had any more advice?

    Thanks again

Get a good evaluation from a chiropractor or P.T. trained in Mckenzie evaluation and treatment. Prolonged sitting issues usually points toward disc problems. Check out this post for a sciatica summary.

The foam angel in the fundamentals series should make an impact.

Hello, I found you through a search to find some relief for what I think is Piriformis Syndrome. I have pain in the upper part of my hip, about a hand’s width above my buttocks. When leaning over, I can feel a pull in my back/hip. After doing your stretch. I did feel some better, but considering I suffer from several other spinal issues, I know it will take time. I do have a question though. About a year ago during a routine MRI, it was discovered that I have a Syrinx, (fluid filled cyst) from the T7 to T10 area on my spine. From what I’ve read, complications can arise, but my doctor dismisses any concern I have. Is this a normal thing and I’m overreacting?

Glad it helped, Linda.  Your posture is a reflection of all the mental, physical, and nutritional/chemical stress on your body.  Keep the intention of pushing away from your support points and that will help immensely.

I can't sit or sleep well.  I walk a lot and do a lot of physical exercise. I am also 72 years old. I shall try your exercises and see if they will aleve this pain. Thanks for your video on you tube and while I cannot even get one leg across my lap, I shall try and do the other exercises. Maybe I need to stretch more after walking.

Helloi found your website which is great and hopefully can help. I had sciatica approx 3 years ago which "resolved" itself (really means I left hospital in hindsight I guess). Ever since then I have been plagued by primarily a sore knee but also bit of numbness on gog toe and foot and "issues" with right leg. Eventually had a MRI scan after seeing various including physiotherapist, chiro, acupuncture and osteopath. Yipee I had a torn miniscus – 8 weeks after operation the same pain is back… I believe it has something to do with hips, leg length difference etc etc. So ight knee is still sore pretty well constantly – can release quads , stretch etc and this gives some relief but nothing sustantainable. Any suggestions 🙂

    Much appreciated

Grettings Doc! I have been a personal trainer now for six years and our minds are on the same frequency. Around the same time as I obtained my NSCA certification, I was in an automobile accident that left me with a herniated T-3 and a metal plate connecting the synovial joints of my pelvis together, amoung other injuries. This led me down a path of teaching my body and core to work properly again and like you say, 'train movement patterns and the brain'. I have taken my clients down this same path and am achieving great results. I look forward to the information and knowledge you share and hope to someday take the course when money is more available. Look for a PT or chiro who knows about Mckenzie method for a better diagnosis of the cause.  Also put the word “disc” in the search box on this site and there will be more info for you there.

Everything is designed to be safe if followed exactly. Avoid flexing your lumbar spine, especially if you are lifting or otherwise placing load on it. If anything makes pain worse you discontinue immediately.

check out this post http://www.gettoyourcore.com/side-glide/ and also search “disc” in the search box for more information.

    Hi Steve –

I am 41 years of age and have suffered with my back since i was in my 20s. I think partly due to an accident, stress both emotional and physical. i have tried a lot of things and learnt what helps and what does not. In the last 5 years i would say my stress has been worse and i have worked hard to de stress. I have tried yoga, tai chi (did not like the bloke), postural correction exercises and more tai chi. All if I found make me hurt if i push myself. I do notice my head and shoulders round particularly when I bend and i have always had a ring mark around chest to prove it. My legs always feel tired and dont wont to work. My main question is – will this help as with all the corrective exercises in the world i believe a lot of it is in personality. cheers Rob

Sadly being on the West Coast when I am too busy at work I miss the coaching which has been so valuable when I don’t understand an exercise or movement.

I have wanted to tell you about a wonderful tool I happened across that may fit in nicely with what you do. It is called “Pelvicore Ball.”
